What are Bulkheads and Seawalls?
Bulkheads and seawalls are a property owner’s means of defense against bodies of water. Although the ocean is beautiful, rising and falling tides, waves, and tropical storms can be devastating to the natural landscape. These walls are designed to protect areas of human habitation, conserve soil by fighting erosion, and they are often made of substantially heavy materials, such as concrete and cement. While bulkheads and seawalls are excellent at protecting land, they are subject to damage over time.
What Causes Damage to Bulkheads and Seawalls?
Seawalls and bulkheads are designed to withstand the strong and repeated forces of rising waters, however, it is not uncommon for them to develop cracks, holes, and other types of gaps. When water levels are high, these conditions allow water to permeate the wall and absorb into the soil on the backside of the wall. When the water recedes, it pulls the saturated soil along with it, causing troublesome erosion to the land behind the wall. This can result in sinking concrete surfaces, including pathways, parking lots, and steps.
The Solution for Seawall and Bulkhead Stabilization
Many property owners find themselves bringing in fill dirt and new landscaping time and time again to achieve soil stabilization in the land surrounding the seawall or bulkhead. While this will repair the aesthetic appearance of the land, it does not address the damage to the wall that is causing the unsightly erosion. Thankfully, our team has a solution.
To achieve seawall and bulkhead stabilization, we use a special polyurethane foam that provides a water-tight seal for cracks, gaps, and failed joints. Additionally, we perform void filling services behind the wall and underneath the footer to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion from occurring in the future. The polyurethane foam product we use is local to Texas. This means it was specifically designed with the unique features of Texas soils in mind, providing a lightweight and efficient seawall and bulkhead stabilization.
