Concrete Maintenance Tips
Fall is the perfect time to perform some easy maintenance tasks that can improve the longevity of your concrete surfaces. By completing the three activities below, you’ll keep your concrete looking great year round.
Prune Bushes and Trees

Before
One of the great things about our state is the lush foliage we get to enjoy thanks to the warm temperatures and high humidity. While all these trees, bushes, and plants are great to look at, they can cause damage to concrete surfaces if not maintained properly. The weight of overgrown branches can break due to high winds or accumulated moisture from storms. If these broken limbs fall on your patio, driveway, or other concrete slabs, they could damage the surface. Additionally, although ice storms are rare here in Houston, they do happen. If your trees and bushes overhang your concrete surfaces, ice may not melt properly, and that may also cause damage to the slab.
Remove Planters and Furniture
As a general rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to remove outdoor furniture such as tables, chairs, and planters for a few reasons. Doing do will protect these belongings from exposure to the changing weather conditions that come in fall and winter, but it can also protect your concrete slab from damage. If high winds kick up and knock over your grill or other piece of furniture, the result may be a chip out of your concrete. This single chip can compromise the surface and allow moisture to seep below. Additionally, once all of the items are removed from your patio, it’s easier to sweep away debris and inspect for cracks that may have appeared since your last inspection.
Reseal and Repair

After
If your cement slab appears to be in good condition when you clean and inspect it, you can go ahead and apply a sealant that will protect it from moisture during the upcoming rainy season. If, however, during the course of your sweeping and inspection, you notice areas where your expansion joints have separated or there are cracks in your slab, repairs may be needed. Either of these conditions can result in your concrete sinking or otherwise becoming uneven. If this is the case, not only are activities like sweeping much more difficult, the appearance and safety of your cement surface may be compromised. Contacting a reputable concrete lifting company, like Tilted Concrete Solutions, is your best bet for ensuring your concrete slab is restored to its rightful position.
